If you haven’t seen The Christmas Story, then you are going to be completely lost with this post, and you need to go watch it!
My daycare provider is awesome. And she is obsessed with all things Christmas and is one of *those* who talk about it all year long. Last year I remember having a brief conversation with her about how she saw someone in town had the infamous leg lamp in their window and she was SO jealous.
Fast forward to about a month ago… I decided I would make her the leg lamp for her Christmas present this year!
Here is what you will need:
- 3D printer
- I used 3D Solutech white filament
- The file can be found on Thingiverse Here- I did scale up 450%
- Lamp Pieces
- Lamp Shade from Goodwill
- Lamp Kit Hardware purchase from local Hardware store- True Value.
- Wooden Plaque (Walmart)
- Fishnet stockings (Walmart)
- Paint (JoAnn’s)
- Black Fringe (JoAnn’s)
- Hot Glue
- Super Glue
So I started with printing the file at 450% in 4 pieces with 15% infill, which took about 36 hours to complete. I assembled the leg using super glue to attach the 4 leg pieces.
I painted the leg a flesh color with some basic paint from JoAnn’s with a small painters brush. Hint: You can put a fan on the leg to help speed up the drying time! Next, I used a Satin finish black paint for the shoe and again let it dry completely. Then I completed the painting portion by painting the wooden base. In the movie it is all black, but I thought that was too much black, so after the black had tried, I went over it with the Pearl white that I had used on the Beauty and the Beast set in a previous blog post, which created a beautiful silver look!
Now it is time for the fishnet stocking which is the hardest part of this process. I cut a full leg from the stocking with about an inch of the top adjustable band. I took the stocking opening and applied to the thigh of the lamp and pulled the stocking down to cover the entire leg, so the typical part that would be touching your toes, is actually around the thigh. I used hot glue to attach the fishnets to the thigh, and then glued again to the shoe. Take your time in planning/cutting the stockings, and stretch them tight to have an authentic look.
The final step is adding the lamp hardware. I found the lamp kit at my local hardware store, but also saw them for sale on Amazon. It is pretty self explanatory with the directions on the kit, but you just thread the cord through the hole in the base and wire accordingly. When all assembled, super glue the leg to the wooden base.
I found this perfect lampshade thrifting at Goodwill. I would have reused the hardware from the purchased lamp, but was unable to disassemble without damage to the components. I hot glued the black fringe on the lamp.
And just like that you have “A MAJOR AWARD!” that “Must be Italian”.
