Galvanized Tin Technique

Hey Everyone!

I was SO excited for CookieCon 2020, and let me just tell you, it was a BLAST! I made this windmill cookie for my Sugar Show entry piece for the Home Sweet Home category. When I still had the idea in my head, I started researching to see if I could find any instructions for the tin look I was wanting to achieve and could not locate anything. So, I decided I would document my process so that it may help others looking for the same thing.

I bought a tray from Hobby Lobby that kind of had the tin coloring I was looking for to help with inspiration.

Supplies I used:

  • Amerimist Silver Airbrush color
  • Americolor Black gel color
  • Americolor White gel color
  • Silver Luster Dust
  • Silver Leaf
  • Everclear 190 proof alcohol
  • Tweezers (for baking only)
  • Paintbrush (for baking only- needs to be Nylon bristles)
  • Paint Palette
  • Cup of water

I mixed the black and white gel colors to achieve four different grays.

I used this flat brush that I believe was a Wilton brand paint brush. You can use any paintbrush as long as it has Nylon bristles and new, of if it has only ever been used with edible products. You may see the fan brush in the picture next to the paint palette, but I did not use it for the tin look.

I used this brush and started with the darkest gray and started to paint the blades using short cross hatch style strokes.

After I did the same technique to all blades, I washed my brush and chose a lighter gray and continued cross hatch style strokes in a random pattern. I tried to make each blade slightly different so they didn’t look identical.

Repeat these steps until most of the white is covered and let it dry.

After allowing the cookie to dry, I mixed a little Everclear with my Silver luster dust to create a paint, and poured a little of the Silver airbrush color into a new spot on my paint palette. Using the same previous cross hatch technique, I applied the silver luster dust paint first, and then used the airbrush color to do the same. At this point, their should not be any white remaining on the blades.

I used tweezers to tear small pieces of silver leaf and used a barely wet paintbrush to apply just a little dampness to the cookie where you want to add the silver leaf. When the silver leaf has adhered to the cookie, I used the same barely damp paintbrush to smooth out any wrinkles. Repeat this step until you are happy with the look. Yes, this took me awhile, lol.

You can see the tray coloring in the background is now very similar to the cookie.

You can always go back and touch up any area you want, and you can always use a damp paintbrush with just water to help blend colors as well.

When I was happy with my blades, I used a copper airbrush color and luster dust to trace over my pencil marks to attach the blades.

And there you have it, a nice galvanized tin finish!

I will create another post in the future about the mechanical construction, and the painted base cookie. If you are interested in the cookie cutter, just shoot me a message! This one was 5 1/2″ tall and wide.

.STL Files Coming Soon

Hey Everyone!

Great news! I will be adding .STL cookie cutter files to my Etsy shop in the coming weeks! This means, for those of you who own 3D printers, you can buy the file and print at home. This will save you shipping costs, cutter costs, and be able to print immediately!

I’m all ears in any feedback or suggestions to help my shop improve.

Valentine’s Day Designs!

I have released the first of my Valentine’s Day designs for 2019! I may still release a few more, but I know I haven’t posted in awhile. You can also now find me on Instagram! #KaneSugarDesigns

Olive Me Loves Olive You

Seriously, how adorable is this!? I used my cookie cutter and 2 part silk screen stencil to airbrush the wording and the olives! I used an edible marker for the black facial details, luster dust for the rosy cheeks, and edible paint for the red olive top.

Bee Mine

This set is one of my faves! I again used a silk screen stencile for the wording and the bee. I hand painted the heart, and used an edible marker for his smile. I didn’t get a clean spray on the wording so I actually went back over it with a brush and hand painted it on. That is a skill I am going to try to practice in 2019!

Teddy Love

This adorable cutter could be so many things! The animal could easily be made into a polar bear, teddy bear, or panda bear. Hugs could be replaced with XOXO, or even a personalized name. Haven’t gotten around to making this sample yet!

I am also working on a few inappropriate sets, because those are the most fun 🙂 More to come!

LegLamp

If you haven’t seen The Christmas Story, then you are going to be completely lost with this post, and you need to go watch it!

My daycare provider is awesome. And she is obsessed with all things Christmas and is one of  *those* who talk about it all year long. Last year I remember having a brief conversation with her about how she saw someone in town had the infamous leg lamp in their window and she was SO jealous.

Fast forward to about a month ago… I decided I would make her the leg lamp for her Christmas present this year!

Here is what you will need:

  • 3D printer
    • I used 3D Solutech white filament
    • The file can be found on Thingiverse Here- I did scale up 450%
  • Lamp Pieces
    • Lamp Shade from Goodwill
    • Lamp Kit Hardware purchase from local Hardware store- True Value.
  • Wooden Plaque (Walmart)
  • Fishnet stockings (Walmart)
  • Paint (JoAnn’s)
  • Black Fringe (JoAnn’s)
  • Hot Glue
  • Super Glue

So I started with printing the file at 450% in 4 pieces with 15% infill, which took about 36 hours to complete. I assembled the leg using super glue to attach the 4 leg pieces.

I painted the leg a flesh color with some basic paint from JoAnn’s with a small painters brush. Hint: You can put a fan on the leg to help speed up the drying time! Next, I used a Satin finish black paint for the shoe and again let it dry completely. Then I completed the painting portion by painting the wooden base. In the movie it is all black, but I thought that was too much black, so after the black had tried, I went over it with the Pearl white that I had used on the Beauty and the Beast set in a previous blog post, which created a beautiful silver look!

Now it is time for the fishnet stocking which is the hardest part of this process. I cut a full leg from the stocking with about an inch of the top adjustable band. I took the stocking opening and applied to the thigh of the lamp and pulled the stocking down to cover the entire leg, so the typical part that would be touching your toes, is actually around the thigh. I used hot glue to attach the fishnets to the thigh, and then glued again to the shoe. Take your time in planning/cutting the stockings, and stretch them tight to have an authentic look.

The final step is adding the lamp hardware. I found the lamp kit at my local hardware store, but also saw them for sale on Amazon. It is pretty self explanatory with the directions on the kit, but you just thread the cord through the hole in the base and wire accordingly.  When all assembled, super glue the leg to the wooden base.

I found this perfect lampshade thrifting at Goodwill. I would have reused the hardware from the purchased lamp, but was unable to disassemble without damage to the components. I hot glued the black fringe on the lamp.

And just like that you have “A MAJOR AWARD!” that “Must be Italian”.

Halloween Cookies!

So yes, I’m terrible at updating this blog on a regular basis…moving on…

I LOVE Halloween. I always have. I have so many Halloween ideas in my mind, finding the time to actually create them is the hard part!

My first designs for this year were this really cute Bat and Ghost pair. Aren’t they adorable!?

batandghost

I know there are a ton of each of these cutters in existence, but these are the perfect size to pair together and just a little more unique than others, and have so many potential uses!

I also decided to jump on board the trendy Halloween train and came up with this Basic Witch set! Get it?! Basic Witch? If you replace the W with a B… oh, you got it? ok. 🙂

BasicWitch

The cutter and stencil can be found in my Etsy shop. I know so many girlfriends that would be so happy to receive this set!

Happy Halloweening all!

My next post will involve creating a Halloween costume for my now 2 yr old son 🙂
